Interior Design Tip #1

Use It!

Houses are to be lived in, sofas are to be sat on & kitchens are for cooking.

The most important factor in a home is to live in it. When designing for my clients I always keep in mind the function of the spaces. You need to think about the flow of the room, can you move around it easily & safely, & is the purpose of the room being utilised?

A kitchen needs storage, preparation space, correct lighting, enough space around the cooktop & a decent cleaning up zone.

Lounge rooms need relaxing space, areas to kick up your feet & soft textures to make you feel at ease. Also make sure you add options for soft lighting & task lighting for all occasions.

Bathrooms need washable finishes, storage at your fingertips & good lighting so you can actually see yourself in the mirror! You also need adequate ventilation to ensure no mould will grow.

How do you use it?

When thinking about the area you are planning on changing, think – How do you use it? These answers to that may determine it’s whole shape, colour & feel. And then you can always add the decoration & colours after that.

For example – You have a large Lounge Room, leaving an empty corner. What do you do in that Lounge Room? Do you like to read – add a Library nook. Do you like to drink – add a Bar Trolley. Do you like to play musical instruments – add them  a chair to sit on while playing.

If you fill your home with you, then you will always be comfortable there.
