Interior Design Tip #6 _ Know YOUR Style

Know Your Style

When you are planning on building or renovating a home, you need to know what style you want to make it a consistent look in your home. Once you know what your personal design style is then it makes it easy to get it right.

Do some research… magazines, Pinterest, Google searches, Houzz searches, whatever your choice of medium there are millions of Interior Design pictures out there. Save the ones you like. Create a folder online or a physical mood board of the images. You will find a theme. This may be colours, patterns, textures or products that repeat themselves again & again.

Be aware that there are design styles out there, such as Industrial, Scandinavian, French Provincial, The Hamptons, etc. These can be handy to look at as part of your design, but don’t feel like you have to fully conform to these styles. They fit to an era or a place which may not suit you & your home. Plus, once those particular styles are out of vogue, your home can look dated. You can blend portions of these design styles into your look, but focus on the smaller parts – the colours, textures, patterns & products you like.

If you have a partner who also has a say in the overall look, have them do the same. You will find overlapping themes & this is where you can have common ground to ensure you will both be happy.

Once you find your themes, then look for images of them all together in a set. This way you will know how the overall appearance will be. You may be lucky enough to have one of your saved images which covers all your wants. This can then be used to show tradespeople or help with your ‘shopping list’ to gain the look you are after.

Finding YOUR STYLE is essential when talking to your tradies. This way you can communicate what you want from them & have a clear focus for yourself during the process. A picture says a thousand words… these will ensure everyone is on the same page, ensuring the best result.
