Storage

Storage

Storage is a massively important element in every home as we have so much ‘stuff’ now days. It’s best to think cleverly about your room to find under-utilised space. Under bed storage tubs, using the tops of wardrobes, inside staircases & under island benches. Each room has an area to tap into.

You could have your kitchen kickboards / baseboards made with removable fronts to slide in large platters, trays or wine bottles. If you have underfloor space, add a good old fashioned trap door & create a clean under floor storage room or cupboard. Add a folding ceiling ladder & use your in ceiling space to store larger pieces like the Christmas Tree or extra dining chairs. The roof cavity is usually an untapped area.

The Walls

Use your wall vertical space by adding ladders or racks to hang scarves or shoes, towels in a bathroom, coats in a Laundry or Mudroom, or pots & pans in a kitchen. Add shelves above washing machines with clean white baskets to store washing powders or liquids – this also keeps them safe from little hands & keeps smaller items organised in groups. Install a set of neat corner shelves in an entry way for keys or small pot plants. In narrow spaces, create wall niches inside the walls, utilising the interior wall cavities to add a shelf or sneaky wall cabinets.

Renting?

If you are a renter & can’t tap into the structure of the home, think cleverly about furniture pieces. Can you use them in multiple ways, like storage ottomans in the lounge room, sofa beds for extra guests or tucked away office spaces. Use bookcases to utilise the height of the room & keep them in light colours so they don’t feel imposing. Add baskets on shelves to store smaller items, roll or fold blankets & place them along with your cushions on the shelves for easy access. Extra bedlinen can fit in bedside tables drawers & space blankets under the bed.

Houses are surprisingly large & there’s always a place to gain more storage.
